Several EU Members of Parliament from the Greens, Social Democrats, Free Democrats and the Left have urged UEFA to take a clearer stance and to consider consequences-including possible boycotts-as the 2026 World Cup is set to be held in the United States. Their letter follows the decision by FIFA to award former U.S. President Donald Trump a “FIFA Peace Prize” a move that the MPs view as an endorsement of policies that undermine the sport’s core values.
In the letter, the MPs warn that recent U.S. actions, particularly those taken during the Trump administration, have raised serious doubts about the country’s respect for international law, democratic standards and the principle of self‑determination. They argue that UEFA cannot allow the 2026 tournament to normalize or legitimize such attitudes.
Among the signatories are Green Party MP Rasmus Andersen and Social Democrat MP Matthias Ecke, alongside representatives from the Free Democrats and the Left. The MPs specifically reference Trump’s repeated comments about Greenland, in which the island’s people were described as a “strategic or economic resource” rather than a community entitled to decide their own future. They see the World Cup as a platform that could reinforce these divisive narratives, and therefore call for a more decisive response from UEFA.
