The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has announced the allocation of over 700 million euros for worldwide crisis relief. Speaking at the close of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York on Saturday evening, von der Leyen stated that conflicts, extreme weather events, and rising living costs are affecting the lives of many people globally, adding, “If we work together, we can make the world a better place.”
She clarified that the planned measures would provide support to displaced communities throughout Africa, as well as to the local communities that accommodate them. Furthermore, the funds will supplement emergency aid for individuals affected by the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine. Von der Leyen summarized her commitment with the message: “My message is simple: Europe stands by you.” This announcement was made in the context of the “2026” campaign run by the non-governmental organization Global Citizen.
