The European Union expressed deep concern regarding the United States’ announcement of intended sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC).
In a statement released from Brussels on Saturday, the EU reaffirmed its “unwavering” commitment to a rule-based international order, emphasizing that the ICC is an essential component of that system. The bloc stressed that international criminal justice plays a critical role in holding accountable those who violate international law through the gravest crimes.
The EU stated unequivocally that the United States must withdraw these planned measures. However, the declaration also noted that Brussels welcomes the willingness of the US to discuss its concerns with the states parties to the Rome Statute, as well as the decision to postpone the effective date of any actions.
Furthermore, the European Union is prepared to take all necessary measures to ensure that the ICC can effectively fulfill its vital mandate.
