The EU Commission is planning to regulate the cloud business operations of US tech giants Amazon and Microsoft under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Citing internal sources, the Commission aims to announce this decision this Thursday. Preliminary findings indicate that the Commission has tentatively classified both corporations as “gatekeepers”-companies possessing significant market power and considerable influence.
The two firms have now been given time to respond to this designation. The EU Commission expects to issue a final decision regarding the classification in November.
As designated gatekeepers, the companies are required to comply with specific EU regulations. Failure to adhere to these requirements could lead the Commission to launch official proceedings. In the event of serious violations, penalties could reach up to ten percent of the company’s global annual revenue.
