Marie‑Agnes Strack‑Zimmermann, chair of the European Parliament’s Defence Committee and member of the FDP, called for harsh consequences over Hungary’s renewed blockade stance on Ukraine policy. Addressing the “Spiegel”, she warned that “Hungary under Orbán not only undermines solidarity with Ukraine but also the security‑political capacity of all of Europe”. Strack‑Zimmermann pointed out that Hungary has long benefited enormously from European Union funds while at the same time trampled on shared values. She urged that if a country “systematically sabotages European decisions and feeds authoritarian narratives”, its voting rights in the Council must be revoked, adding that “the Council table should no longer be occupied by an unimpeded Hungary”.
The German Green MEP and Hungary expert Daniel Freund echoed these concerns. “Viktor Orbán’s veto power endangers Ukrainian and European security again, handing Putin the advantage” he told the “Spiegel”. He called for the removal of Hungary’s voice from the Council, arguing that Europe has been “long enough extorted by Orbán”.
