Following a recent meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, security analyst Carlo Masala is urging European nations to formulate an independent strategy regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Masala suggested to the Funke Media Group that the meeting appeared to align Trump with Putin’s position, a development he described as “catastrophic” from a Ukrainian perspective. He argued that Europe must distance itself from what he termed the “erratic perspective” of the U.S. President.
Previous European attempts to moderate Trump’s approach, Masala stated, have proven ineffective. He emphasized the necessity for Europe to “develop its own strategy independently of these shifts in Washington and utilize the tools at its disposal.
As an example, Masala highlighted Europe’s continued indecision regarding the allocation of 300 billion euros in frozen Russian assets to Ukraine. He assessed that Putin emerged from the summit as the clear victor, portraying the meeting as a demonstration of Russia’s standing on the world stage and effectively erasing the perceived slight from a previous characterization by former U.S. President Barack Obama that labeled Russia a regional power. “Russia is once again a great power, that is how it perceives itself” Masala concluded.
