Europe Needs Independent Ukraine Strategy, Says Military Expert

Following a recent summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, security expert Carlo Masala is urging European nations to formulate an independent strategy for resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

Masala, speaking to the Funke Media Group, indicated that the meeting appeared to demonstrate a renewed alignment between Trump and Putin, a development he characterizes as potentially devastating for Ukraine. He argued that Europe must distance itself from what he perceives as an unpredictable US foreign policy approach.

The previously pursued tactic of attempting to moderate Trump’s positions, Masala asserted, has proven ineffective. He stressed the necessity for Europe to develop a self-directed strategy, independently of policy shifts in Washington and to actively utilize available resources.

Specifically, Masala highlighted the ongoing delay in a European decision regarding the allocation of approximately 300 billion euros in frozen Russian assets to Ukraine. He believes Putin emerged from the summit strengthened, viewing the encounter as a meeting between equals-effectively erasing the perceived slight of being labeled a regional power by former US President Barack Obama. “Russia perceives itself as a great power once again” Masala concluded.
