EU’s Kaja Kallas Intensifies Economic Pressure on Russia by Targeting the Shadow Fleet

The EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said she wants to raise pressure on Russia by taking a more vigorous action against its shadow fleet. “We need more economic pressure on Russia” she told the German TV programme ”Tagesthemen” on Tuesday. “We must do something about the shadow fleet. It is a tool Russia uses to distribute oil – and through those revenues it finances the war. Here we have to be creative”.

During a visit to the Ukrainian town of Butscha, Kallas stressed that “we now need to begin pursuing the perpetrators, even though that is difficult”. She added that when the war ends, “there must be assurance that the people who have suffered will see justice”.

When asked whether weapons that were meant for Ukraine are being diverted because of the war in the Middle East, Kallas replied that it is a sort of focus competition between the two conflicts. She had asked NATO whether “a device financed by Europe” was heading to the Middle East; the response was, “That is not the case”. “It will continue to go to Ukraine as planned”.
