In light of the current low water levels, Martin Burkert, chairman of the EVG railway union, has issued a warning about potential further cuts within DB Cargo. While Burkert told the “Rheinische Post” that DB Cargo is currently maintaining the ability to shift freight and preventing immediate trouble for industry, he noted that cargo operations have reached their capacity limits following years of strict cost constraints. Burkert emphasized that the Federal Government should not evaluate the freight railway system based exclusively on economic criteria, nor should it use the railway as a hidden advantage or “trump card” in times of crisis solely to improve its financial statements. Furthermore, he pointed out that no one knows how long these low water levels will persist. According to the EVG chairman, such incidents represent a new reality brought about by the climate crisis.
