The former Hungarian Foreign Minister and EU Commissioner, Peter Balazs, leveled serious accusations against Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, ahead of the election on April 12th. Speaking to “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” Balazs asserted that Orbán is “Putins most valuable agent in the West”. He added that the Kremlin has no better person to represent Russian interests within the EU and NATO.
According to the former Foreign Minister, Putin is willing to pay a high price to keep Orbán in place as a Russian agent. Balazs claimed Orbán expertly plays this role, suggesting that the Prime Minister knows exactly that he is valuable to Putin, Xi Jinping, and Donald Trump only as long as he remains within the EU and NATO.
Balazs noted that many Hungarians had hoped for Orbán’s removal as early as 2018 and 2022. He observed, “However, the dissatisfaction with the government has never been as great as it is today. The Hungarians are eagerly awaiting a savior, and Peter Magyar is now entering the political stage”.
Despite this, Balazs does not anticipate that Hungary will quickly become a strong supporter of Ukraine under Magyar. He predicts that if Tisza wins the election, there will be a gradual return to normalcy. “There will be a very difficult transition initially, similar to what happened in Poland after the right-wing populist PiS was ousted” stated the former Foreign Minister. However, he warned that the transition in Hungary will be much harder because Orbán has placed loyal supporters in all key institutions.
