Berlin’s public prosecutor’s office has filed charges against former German Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer, stemming from allegations of perjury before a parliamentary inquiry committee investigating the country’s road toll system.
According to reports, the charges relate to statements made by Scheuer on October 2nd, 2020, during testimony before the Bundestag’s investigative committee, which prosecutors allege contained knowingly false information. The investigation into the matter has been ongoing since early May 2022.
Scheuer confirmed receiving notification of the charges, stating he had been informed of the indictment filed with the Berlin Regional Court. He emphasized that the case does not concern the failed implementation of a vehicle toll system in Germany, for which he has already accepted political responsibility.
The former minister has voiced strong criticism of the prosecuting attorney, expressing his incomprehension and concern over the decision to pursue charges. Scheuer suggested the timing and motivations behind the indictment appear politically motivated, noting the case was brought forward during a typically slow news period known as the “Sommerloch” or summer slump. He indicated he finds the reasons for the charges unclear after such a prolonged investigation.
