The German Weather Service (DWD) has significantly expanded its warning regarding severe thunderstorms. In addition to parts of the states of Lower Saxony, Baden-Württemberg, and Bavaria, the warning now also affects Saxony-Anhalt, Hesse, and Schleswig-Holstein, DWD announced on Friday evening.
These storms could result in various hazards, including uprooted trees, falling roof tiles, and flooding in cellars and streets. Damage from hail is also possible, affecting buildings, cars, and agricultural crops.
The background for this weather event is a frontal system situated over central Germany. This system is separating hot air in the southeast from cooler air masses further north. Various localized, often powerful, and occasionally severe thunderstorms are developing as a result. The current warnings are initially valid until Saturday night, but the DWD noted that these warnings could be extended or expanded to cover additional areas.
