Expect Ongoing Issues

Berlin’s S-Bahn network continues to face significant operational challenges, with disruptions expected to persist for several months, according to Alexander Kaczmarek, the designated representative for Deutsche Bahn in Berlin and Brandenburg. He reported that daily incidents currently range from 200 to 300, stemming from issues with signals, control centers, track switches and rolling stock.

While a task force established in August has yielded initial solutions for the city lines, Kaczmarek cautioned against expecting immediate and complete reliability. He emphasized that resolving these persistent problems requires ongoing effort and there is no single, rapid fix available. New issues consistently arise, impeding quick recovery.

Despite the ongoing struggles, Kaczmarek expressed optimism regarding the planned S15 line, a crucial project connecting northern and southern sections of the network. He confirmed that the infrastructural work for this line, previously plagued by delays and postponements, is now complete and anticipates its launch in Spring 2026.

Further, he conveyed strong anticipation for the planned opening of the Dresden rail link in mid-December, which will provide a significantly faster connection between Berlin’s main train station and the capital’s airport (BER). Acknowledging the 30-year timeframe for the project, Kaczmarek stated the planned launch represents a pivotal step forward. He affirmed a commitment to addressing the current infrastructural issues and aims to demonstrate tangible progress towards resolution by the end of the year.
