The President of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), Marcel Fratzscher, has expressed support for a proposal by CDU leader Friedrich Merz regarding the introduction of a compulsory social service year for all citizens. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” Fratzscher described the proposal as “clever and balanced” emphasizing the need for all segments of society to share responsibility, particularly those with greater capacity, during times of crisis.

Fratzscher further argued that the obligation shouldn’t be limited to younger generations. He suggested that a social service component should also include retired individuals. Referencing current geopolitical challenges, he stated that the relevance of any past service is superseded by the immediate need for a comprehensive and unified societal response.

The proposal, advocating for a general compulsory service year for both men and women, had previously been championed by Merz during an appearance on the ARD talk show hosted by Caren Miosga. The concept aims to foster social cohesion and address pressing societal needs through broader participation and engagement across demographics.
