Political scientist Carlo Masala of the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich stated that the German government must condemn attacks announced by US President Donald Trump against Iran’s civilian infrastructure, anticipating that such an event would lead to an irreparable break within NATO. Speaking to “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” (Wednesday edition), Masala asserted that attacks on civilian targets ultimately constitute war crimes, noting that despite the US having committed such acts before, they never announced them in advance. According to Masala, if the attacks do occur, the German government cannot maintain its current position of cautious inaction. Instead, it would need to issue a very explicit and clear condemnation, which, he concluded, means “we are heading toward the definitive breakdown of NATO”.
