FDP’s Höne Pushes for Broad Coalition of Liberal Ideas Amid Leadership Challenge

Henning Höne, the chair of the FDP in North Rhine-Westphalia, is navigating the internal power struggle within the party by advocating for a broad conceptual grounding of liberalism and proposing a new leadership style. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” (Wednesday edition), Höne stated his desire to create a party that unifies all facets of liberalism. He emphasized that the party must accommodate individuals who are strongly committed to economic issues just as much as those who advocate for expanded civil rights. Höne highlighted the need for a clever political and leadership approach, which he claims to offer, with the goal of making the narrative of liberalism more accessible in everyday life, perhaps by clarifying their political ideas through a revitalization of the concept of the “ladder of opportunity”. His stated objective is to unify rather than divide the party.

Regarding the current debate surrounding high fuel prices, Höne demanded the immediate repeal of the newly implemented “once-a-day” rule under antitrust law. He argued that the daily sharp price hikes occurring at noon represent an incorrect strategy, as they cause prices to surge initially. According to Höne, figures such as federal cabinet leader Friedrich Merz (CDU), vice-chancellor and SPD boss Lars Klingbeil, and Bavarian Prime Minister and CSU leader Markus Söder seem to orchestrate a “state price increase every lunchtime” a measure he insisted must be abolished immediately.
