Alice Schwarzer has announced the discontinuation of her feminist magazine, “Emma”. She reported on Wednesday that the upcoming issue, which will be available at kiosks starting October 27th, will be the second-to-last, with the issue published on December 8th serving as the final one.
Regarding the reasons behind the decision, Schwarzer clarified that they are not rooted in economic difficulties. Although the circulation is decreasing, income still covers expenses, and there is a financial reserve. Instead, the decision was made because it is time to move on. She noted that “Emma” has maintained its position for “over three feminist generations,” has resisted various trends, and has challenged “certain nonsense in the name of feminism.” Ultimately, the editorial stance feels “exhausted.”
Nonetheless, the magazine’s archive will be preserved. Schwarzer announced that the entire collection will be incorporated into the German Literature Archive in Marbach, where it will be cataloged and made available to interested parties, media, and researchers starting in 2029.
