Germany is facing a growing concern regarding the increased availability of synthetic opioids, including substances like fentanyl, within the country. This warning comes from Hendrik Streeck, the German Federal Government’s Commissioner on Addiction and Drugs.
Of particular concern are a group of compounds known as nitazenes, which possess a potency approximately 500 times greater than heroin. Streeck highlighted the extreme danger these substances pose, stating that an amount equivalent to the tip of a pencil could be lethal.
Authorities have observed a significant surge in the prevalence of these drugs across Europe and globally, with an increasing presence on the German black market. Streeck cautioned that the development of these formulations is being aided by advances in artificial intelligence, simplifying the manufacturing process – in some instances, even occurring in clandestine home laboratories.
The commissioner emphasized the considerable risks associated with these opioids, noting that even initial exposure can have severe consequences for individuals who use them. This emerging trend represents a serious public health challenge requiring continued monitoring and preventative measures.
