Filmmaker Fatih Akin Rescues People From Flooded Car

Filmmaker Fatih Akin, known for his critically acclaimed works, recounted a dramatic rescue he undertook several years ago while on a location scouting trip. The incident, which occurred in North Dakota prior to the filming of “The Cut” involved saving an elderly couple from a rapidly flooding car.

Akin explained that the flat, treeless landscape of North Dakota, prone to sudden flooding during periods of heavy rainfall, presented unexpected challenges during their reconnaissance mission. While exploring the area in search of visual inspiration, the group stumbled upon a car submerged in a low-lying area, the water level rising swiftly. Only the passenger side of the vehicle remained visible, with the tires spinning futilely.

Recognizing the imminent danger, Akin and his team immediately acted to assist the trapped occupants. Despite the cold weather in March, which included lingering snow, they removed their shoes and plunged into the icy water. Inside the car, they found an elderly couple, the husband already partially submerged and suffering from hypothermia, as was his wife.

Due to the remote location, summoning emergency services proved difficult. The director’s assistant had to ascend a hill to find sufficient cell service to contact the fire department. Responders subsequently expressed their gratitude, noting that without their intervention, the couple likely would not have survived.

The rescue was further complicated by the presence of a dog belonging to the elderly couple. Akin revealed a significant fear of dogs, bordering on a phobia, making the situation particularly stressful as he held the small dog while assisting in the rescue effort.

Following the incident, Akin maintained contact with the couple for a period of time. They sent Christmas cards expressing their faith and appreciation. However, communication has ceased in recent years.
