Fireworks Ban Sparks Fury

The Netherlands is set to ban private fireworks displays for individuals beginning in the 2026/2027 New Year’s Eve period. This policy shift has sparked debate across Germany, with a recent survey revealing significant public support for similar measures within the country.

Commissioned by “Der Stern” and RTL Deutschland and conducted by the market and opinion research institute Forsa, the survey, based on telephone interviews with 1,000 participants between July 3rd and 4th, found that 59 percent of Germans are in favor of prohibiting private fireworks. Conversely, 39 percent oppose such a ban, while two percent expressed no opinion.

A noticeable gender divide emerged in the survey results. Women demonstrate stronger support for a fireworks ban, with 67 percent in favor, compared to men, who support the measure with a slightly narrower majority (51 to 47 percent). The younger male demographic (ages 18-29) presents a different perspective, with 51 percent against a ban and 48 percent in favor.

Political affiliation demonstrably influences opinions on the issue. Supporters of the Left party show the highest level of support for a ban (86 percent), while supporters of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) represent the only group expressing clear opposition (60 percent).
