August Hanning, the former president of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), has begun contesting the charges of treason filed against him following his arrest on Tuesday. According to reports from “Spiegel” on Wednesday, Hanning’s lawyer stated to the news magazine, “My client is being unjustly pursued.” Although it is acknowledged that he possessed confidential documents, his attorney disputed the accusation that he disclosed information within those documents to the detriment of the Federal Republic of Germany-let alone for financial gain. The lawyer added that forthcoming investigations would clarify the facts. The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office has leveled several serious charges against Hanning, including intelligence agent activity, treasonous espionage, probing into state secrets, and attempted treason.
