Former German Foreign Minister Urges Europe to Build Nuclear Armament Amid Uncertain U.S. Security

Former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, a member of the Greens, has called for a “European nuclear weapon”. “Europe must take it on” Fischer told the “Tagesspiegel” in its Tuesday edition, adding that the U.S. security guarantee is now “uncertain”.

He rejects the idea of Germany arming itself with nuclear weapons on its own. “One of the most important lessons from German history” he said, “is that Germany has a responsibility to assume a leadership role in Europe, but always together with the others”.

Fischer warns that Europe has long lived in the illusion of an everlasting peace. “How can you stop an aggressive neighbour from attacking you if you’re not strong enough? Only strength and deterrence can”.

“If I were young today, I would serve in the armed forces” Fischer added. “Times have changed. We are being threatened, and we must defend ourselves”.
