Former German foreign minister Joschka Fischer, a member of the Green Party, says he believes U.S. President Donald Trump is working to erase democracy. He told the “Tagesspiegel” (Thursday edition) that Trump follows an authoritarian path, “he wants to turn America’s democracy into an oligarchy”. Fischer added that the President seeks to replace the system of limited, time‑bound power that relies on free and secret elections with essentially unlimited personal rule. He warned that the United States, which had long pledged freedom, has now abandoned that promise. The 2026 House elections in November are, according to Fischer, the test case where he expects major attempts to undermine the balloting process.
