Former constitutional judge Udo Di Fabio, who is being considered for the position of Federal President, does not necessarily believe that having a woman in Bellevue is an absolute requirement. Speaking to the Tagesspiegel, Di Fabio commented that while “a woman as Federal President is a sympathetic idea, is it a political necessity?” He stressed that most people do not think in terms of group or gender parity. He added that the law should certainly intervene if any person is disadvantaged due to group characteristics. Di Fabio provided an example, stating that in the early 1970s, some activists tried to implement quotas for children of workers because they were underrepresented in leadership positions, a concept he was not convinced by. According to him, the core of the constitutional order must be the individual person, complete with their abilities and strengths, their vulnerabilities and weaknesses, and their personality.
