SC Freiburg Bolsters Squad with Return of Versatile Winger Philipp Treu
SC Freiburg has announced the acquisition of winger Philipp Treu, marking a homecoming for the 24-year-old player. The club confirmed the signing on Monday, bringing Treu back to the Breisgau region.
Treu, a native of Heidelberg, previously spent time within Freiburg’s youth system, beginning his development at the club’s football academy. He was part of the U19 team that secured victory in the DFB Junior Cup in 2018. A year later, he progressed to the U23 squad, contributing to their promotion to the 3. Liga in 2021.
Throughout his period with Freiburg’s second team, Treu participated in 68 competitive matches before transferring to FC St. Pauli in the 2. Bundesliga following their runners-up finish in 2023. At St. Pauli, he played a significant role in their immediate promotion to the Bundesliga, appearing in 35 matches during the past season.
Sporting Director Klemens Hartenbach expressed his delight at Treu’s return, highlighting his consistent defensive performance and his ability to create scoring opportunities. “We are very happy to welcome Philipp back to Freiburg” Hartenbach stated.
Treu himself conveyed his optimism about the move, emphasizing his productive development at St. Pauli and his ambition to progress to the next level with Freiburg. He expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming Bundesliga campaign and the opportunity to compete in the Europa League.
Details of the contract have not been disclosed. Treu will wear the number 29 jersey for SC Freiburg.
