Peter Mandelson, the former British business secretary and U.S. ambassador, was arrested in connection with the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. Police announced on Monday that the 72‑year‑old was taken from his home in Camden, North London, in plain‑clothes officers and transported in an unmarked police vehicle. He is suspected of providing government documents to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. His appointment as ambassador to Washington in December 2024 by Prime Minister Keir Starmer had already sparked controversy because of his known friendship with Epstein. In September, Mandelson was removed from the ambassadorial post after new details about the depth of his relationship with Epstein surfaced; he also stepped down from the House of Lords, retaining his title by parliamentary convention. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a probe into alleged abuse of office is underway, following the release of U.S. Department of Justice emails that raised the possibility that Mandelson had forwarded information to Epstein during his tenure as business secretary under Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
