The first match of the 23rd Bundesliga round ended with SC Freiburg beating Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-1.
In the first half, Freiburg took the lead in the 38th minute when Matthias Ginter scored after a long throw‑in by Treu. Diks inadvertently passed the ball to Ginter, who, under pressure from Gladbach defender Scally, curled a half‑side‑foot shot from five metres into the net. The Gladbach side struggled to create chances and could not threaten the goal.
The second half saw a 2-0 advantage for Freiburg when Igor Matanovic extended the lead in the 74th minute. Following a midfield clearing, Grifo Eggestein launched a sharp cross from the right; Gladbach’s keeper Nicolas cleared it only to the feet of Matanovic, who calmly finished. A consolation goal for the visitors came from Haris Tabakovic, who headed in a corner in the 85th minute, bringing the game back to life, but the scoreline stayed unchanged.
In the standings Freiburg have moved up to seventh place, while the Fohlen have slipped to fourteenth. Freiburg will travel to Frankfurt for their next match on Sunday, whereas Gladbach will face Union Berlin the day before.
