A recent survey conducted by the Bitkom industry association reveals significant spending habits within the German gaming community. The study, which polled 1,209 individuals aged 16 and over, including 626 self-identified gamers, provides insights into the financial investment associated with this popular pastime.
On average, German gamers allocate approximately €29.60 (roughly $31.50) per month towards their hobby. A slight difference in spending is observed between genders, with male gamers spending an average of €30.50, compared to €27 for female gamers.
While younger individuals aged 16 to 29 are considered relatively generous spenders, contributing an average of €28.70 monthly, the enthusiasm extends to older demographics as well. “Silver gamers” aged 65 and above, dedicate around €20.50 per month to their gaming enjoyment.
The majority of gamers (70%) have spent money on video games within the past 12 months. In-game purchases, such as acquiring virtual currencies or equipment, represent the most common expenditure, reported by 56% of respondents. Subscriptions to online gaming services and the purchase or download of games online each accounted for approximately 44% and 40% of spending, respectively. Notably, 15% of gamers still opted to purchase games from brick-and-mortar stores.
The survey highlights that the majority of gaming expenses remain below €50 per month. Only approximately 14% of those who spent money on games last year exceeded this monthly threshold.
