Overall passenger numbers at German airports are showing stagnation. In May, 19.77 million travelers were recorded, representing a slight increase of 0.1 percent compared to the previous year, according to the ADV airport association. However, when measured against May 2019-prior to the coronavirus crisis-the volume of travelers is still 11.5 percent below pre-crisis levels.
The cargo sector presents a different picture. Freight volume at German airports reached 412,775 tonnes in May, which translates to a growth of 1.6 percent compared to the previous year. Furthermore, when compared to 2019, the cargo volume has increased by 2.1 percent. However, the number of commercial flight movements saw a 5.0 percent decline compared to the previous year, totaling 165,393 departures and landings. Compared to 2019, 80.2 percent of commercial flights were operated.
Regarding passenger demand, domestic air traffic in May counted 2.09 million passengers, indicating a 5.0 percent reduction compared to the same period last year. Conversely, European traffic recorded 14.38 million passengers, marking a 2.3 percent increase over the previous year. Although the intercontinental demand declined by 5.6 percent compared to April, it faced a 5.6 percent drop when measured against the prior year.
