Animal‑welfare commissioner Silvia Breher (CDU) has called on carnival revelers to keep their pets out of parade and festive events. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” on Monday, Breher warned, “Pets have no place on carnival parades or celebrations”.
She added that while the festivities bring delight to people, they often cause stress or even fear in animals. “Large, noisy crowds and loud music are simply too much for their highly sensitive senses” she explained. “Those who want to celebrate wholeheartedly can do so-just without their pets”.
The animal‑protection association echoed this plea, urging owners to be considerate. Pets should neither be dressed up in costumes nor treated as an “accessory”. The association noted that unfamiliar clothing can be perceived by many animals as threatening and uncomfortable.
