The German Brewer’s Association (Deutscher Brauer-Bund) is raising alarm bells over the increasing fragility of the sector, with concerns escalating beyond merely economic anxieties and touching upon the preservation of deeply ingrained cultural traditions.
According to Holger Eichele, the association’s managing director, approximately 1,500 breweries across Germany are currently facing “massive pressure”. This pressure stems from a persistent combination of high energy costs, recently finalized wage agreements pushing up personnel expenses and a concerning 15-month decline in domestic beer sales. Energy costs remain a primary driver of financial strain, a problem amplified by the ongoing volatility in global markets and the Bundesregierung’s inconsistent energy policies.
The situation is particularly critical for family-run breweries, many of which boast centuries-old legacies and have previously navigated periods of significant economic upheaval, including both World Wars and currency crises. However, the current confluence of factors leaves many with no viable path forward. While energy relief packages have been implemented, their effectiveness in providing sustained support to businesses with high energy consumption remains questionable.
