Confidence among German businesses has recently improved, according to the Ifo Institute, which reported this Monday that the Ifo Business Climate Index rose to 86.6 points in July, up from 85.7 points in June. Observers had anticipated only a slight increase.
This rise is primarily attributable to significantly better expectations for the future. However, companies reported being slightly less satisfied with their current operations. Despite the uncertain situation in the Persian Gulf, the German economy overall appears less pessimistic.
The manufacturing sector saw a noticeable increase in the index, driven particularly by a substantial boost in expectations. In contrast, assessments of the current situation were slightly weaker. While demand showed signs of recovery and material shortages eased, current performance remained a mixed picture.
The indicator also climbed in the services sector, as service providers became less skeptical about the coming months. Nevertheless, they rated the current business climate slightly lower. Specifically, the mood among travel agencies improved.
In retail, the business climate cheered up again. Businesses reported being a bit more satisfied with their running operations, and pessimistic expectations declined. Department store retailers, in particular, seemed less concerned.
The index also rose within the main construction industry. Both the assessment of the current situation and future expectations registered gains there. Overall, fewer companies reported struggling due to a lack of orders.
