German companies strongly favor having their cloud data processed domestically. According to a survey conducted by the IT industry association Bitkom, the location of cloud service providers’ servers plays a crucial role in vendor selection for 97 percent of companies, with all surveyed firms preferring Germany as the location.
Looking beyond Germany, France is favored by 23 percent of companies, though 17 percent reject the country. A location in another EU state appeals to 68 percent of respondents, contrasted by only a one percent rejection rate. The UK received 14 percent approval but also 32 percent opposition.
Data centers in the USA are preferred by twelve percent, while 51 percent reject them. Similar proportions were recorded for Japan and India. China is overwhelmingly dismissed by the market, with 94 percent of companies ruling it out, and only one percent favoring it as a location.
Bitkom Research conducted this survey by phone, polling 603 German companies that have 20 or more employees during the 14th through 20th calendar week of 2026.
