German Chancellor Merz Arrives in Washington for Third Summit with President Trump Amid Transatlantic Tensions Over Greenland

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) is set to visit U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington again early this month. According to the Axel Springer Global Reporters Network, Merz will meet the president on “March 3” at the White House-his third trip since taking office in “May 2025”.

Merz first visited the U.S. capital on “June 6 2025”. A second, last‑minute trip a year earlier-in “mid‑August”-saw him travel with European heads of state and government to Washington, arriving shortly after President Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

The Chancellor’s forthcoming visit occurs amid rising trans‑Atlantic tensions, largely tied to the U.S. claim on Greenland. Next week, U.S. foreign minister Marco Rubio is slated to travel to Germany for the Munich Security Conference.
