Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump for about a good half‑hour on Sunday, government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius told the German news agency on Monday. According to Merz, the discussion covered the situation in Iran, as well as developments in Israel and Ukraine. The two leaders agreed to remain in close contact. Kornelius said no further details would be released because the call was confidential.
The tension in the Iran region has escalated again. Late Sunday night, Trump issued Iran a 48‑hour ultimatum to open the Strait of Hormuz or he threatened attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure. Kornelius acknowledged that Trump’s remarks had been noted, but he declined to interpret their implications.
