At the start of his visit to the Chancellery on Tuesday, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) welcomed European Parliament President Roberta Metsola. The two highlighted the EU summit scheduled for the end of the week, which Merz said would be a key topic of their discussions.

Metsola, a regular attendee of the European Council, will also brief the council on developments in the European Parliament. Merz praised the close cooperation between the German government and the Parliament, noting that he himself has been a member of the institution and therefore feels a strong affinity for it.
