The recent postponement of judicial elections has not irreparably damaged the governing coalition between the CDU and SPD, according to CDU Secretary General Carsten Linnemann.
While acknowledging shortcomings in internal communication, similar to the prior agreement on electricity taxes, Linnemann stated the coalition intends to learn from these initial difficulties and work towards broader consensus “behind the scenes and in a calm and measured way”. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and cautioned against assigning blame, expressing confidence that a resolution will be found.
Regarding the rejection of the SPD’s previous nominee, Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, Linnemann cited “numerous serious objections” originating from various stakeholders, including religious organizations, legal professionals and medical ethicists. He firmly denied accusations that the CDU’s decision was influenced by extremist elements.
Responding to allegations, made by former Green party leader Ricarda Lang, suggesting that CDU parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn deliberately sought to provoke the coalition’s failure to pave the way for cooperation with the AfD, Linnemann condemned the accusation as “a perfidious insinuation” and suggested Ms. Lang was aware of its falsity. He underscored the CDU’s consistent stance that the AfD aims to undermine the party. Mr. Spahn reiterated his commitment to the coalition’s success, emphasizing his dedication to its continued function.
