German Commissioner Highlights ‘Protection Gap’ as Jewish Communities Face Rising Discrimination

Ferda Ataman, the independent Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, asserts that the rights of Jewish people in Germany are inadequately protected. She stated, in an article for the “Rheinische Post” ahead of the anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, that if Germany truly intends to safeguard Jewish life, it must also strengthen the rights of Jews when they face discrimination.

Ataman emphasized that the protection against discrimination must be improved, specifically citing a “significant gap in the legislation” across institutions like schools and universities.

In light of these concerns, the Federal Anti-Discrimination Office commissioned a study analyzing “the effects of the terrorist attack of October 7, 2023, on Jewish and Israeli communities in Germany.” The final report on this topic is scheduled for release this week. Looking at the anticipated findings, Ataman warned that individuals who openly identify as Jewish or who are from Israel risk severe, existential consequences. These dangers range from disadvantage in housing and job searches to being refused service in restaurants, and even experiencing bullying in daycares and classrooms.
