German Competition Authority Warns of Fuel Price Surge Before Iran War

According to Andreas Mundt, the president of the Federal Cartel Office, drivers should check fuel prices carefully before filling up. “We advise motorists to compare prices consistently and to review their usual rules of thumb” Mundt told the “Rheinische Post” on Wednesday.

The sharpest price spikes still tend to occur in the early morning hours. Consumers can get up‑to‑date information on station prices through the Federal Cartel Office’s fuel market transparency portal.

Mundt noted that after the onset of the military strikes, price hikes averaged about five to six cents per litre, whereas in the days before the escalation the increase was roughly four cents per litre. Even the expectation of a tightening situation had been driving up procurement costs and retail prices. Overall, the changes largely mirrored the rise in crude oil prices and the corresponding jump in wholesale fuel costs.
