Steffen Bilger, the parliamentary manager of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, says he aims to provide tax relief to people with low and middle incomes starting in 2027. He told T‑Online that he believes the party can have a strong proposal ready by mid‑year and that the measures would come into force at the beginning of the next year, directly benefiting households’ wallets.
Bilger added that it remains to be seen whether the proposed income‑tax reform will include the recently discussed increase of the threshold for the top tax rate to €80 000. While the SPD is prepared to adopt such a change, it wants to impose higher taxes on very high earners. Bilger said that, if the Union were to address this issue, he would push for openness in the debate, even though the Union’s position is clear: they do not want to raise taxes but rather lower them. If the coalition were to enter into agreements on this point, the arrangements would reflect that stance.
At the same time, Bilger expressed a desire for “more ambition” in the government’s savings plans. He expects that the ministries will present concrete proposals during the budget‑setting process.
