German Construction Orders Rise, But High & Low Build Show Divergence

Recent data released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reveals fluctuations within Germany’s construction sector. Real incoming orders in the main construction crafts increased by 1.9 percent in July 2025 compared to June 2025, after seasonal and calendar adjustments. However, this overall increase masks contrasting trends within different areas of construction. Incoming orders for building construction decreased by 5.8 percent, while civil engineering orders rose significantly, climbing by 8.9 percent.

Examining a three-month comparison (May-July 2025), the calendar and seasonally adjusted incoming orders were down 1.0 percent compared to the preceding three months (April-June 2025). This reflects a decline in building construction orders (-5.8 percent) partially offset by gains in civil engineering (+3.4 percent).

When compared to July 2024, real incoming orders in the main construction crafts demonstrated a robust increase of 8.7 percent. This year-over-year growth was driven by substantial increases in both building construction (10.9 percent) and civil engineering (6.7 percent). Nominal (unadjusted for inflation) incoming orders were up 11.4 percent compared to the same period last year.

The real turnover (revenue) in the main construction crafts also showed growth, rising by 1.4 percent in July 2025 compared to July 2024. Nominal turnover increased by a larger margin, climbing 4.1 percent to reach €11.1 billion.

Looking at the first seven months of 2025, real turnover increased by 2.1 percent and nominal turnover by 4.5 percent compared to the same period in 2024. The number of people employed in the main construction crafts also showed a slight increase, rising by 1.2 percent in July 2025 compared to July 2024.
