German Court’s Credibility Damaged by Judge Dispute | News

The co-leader of Germany’s Green Party, Felix Banaszak, has strongly criticized the conservative Union bloc following the withdrawal of Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf as a candidate for the Federal Constitutional Court. Speaking on Deutschlandfunk radio, Banaszak described the situation as “quite outrageous” suggesting the move was ultimately forced upon the candidate.

He further asserted that the Union had achieved its objective, but at a significant cost, causing “substantial damage” to the court and, in his view, to German democracy as a whole.

Banaszak accused members of the Union parliamentary group of instrumentalizing Brosius-Gersdorf’s position on the issue of abortion. He clarified that her stance actually reflects the views held by a large majority of the population – maintaining the current practice, but removing it from the criminal code, thereby decriminalizing the procedure rather than simply making it free from punishment. He characterized the proceedings as “rather shabby” and lacking in any substantial, factual discussion.
