German Debt Brake Reform Faces Collapse, Left Party Warns

Reichinnek suggested that the commission established to review the proposed changes was initiated solely due to pressure from the Social Democratic Party (SPD) She affirmed her party has consistently expressed a willingness to participate in dialogue

She strongly criticized the approach taken by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) regarding the selection of judges to the Federal Constitutional Court “The actions of the CDU and CSU are frankly outrageous” she stated, contrasting their current behavior with what she described as the normal democratic procedure of holding discussions on candidates to build consensus and secure majority support Reichinnek accuses the Union parties of refusing to engage in such negotiations and challenged the CDU to clarify its strategic objectives She questioned whether the party is focused on potentially forming a future minority government with support from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) or whether it is committed to collaborating with all democratic parties

The current parliamentary arithmetic means the governing coalition – comprising the CDU, CSU and SPD – lacks the two-thirds majority required to elect Federal Constitutional Court judges and amend the Basic Law (Germany’s constitution) Consequently, they are reliant on securing votes from either the Left Party or the AfD to achieve their objectives
