German Defence Ministry to Upgrade Government Aircraft Internet, Targeting Flawless Connectivity

The German Federal Ministry of Defence is working on a stronger internet connection for its government aircraft. According to “Der Spiegel”, it has confirmed plans to test a higher‑performance internet option from its current provider on an A350 aircraft during February and March. The supplier said the upgrade would give a noticeably higher data transfer rate and higher priority when establishing the satellite link, which could prevent the temporary outages that have plagued the fleet in recent months.

The airline’s white‑painted “Flugbereitschaft” aircraft have experienced repeated internet failures. A notable incident involved Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and his team, who were unable to access online updates about the situation in Iran while flying to India. Such “blind flights” are considered embarrassing amid worldwide crises.
