Philipp Amthor, a CDU politician and State Secretary in the Ministry for Digital Affairs, expressed doubts about a proposed ban on social media for users under 16. Speaking on RTL’s “Frühstart” and ntv on Tuesday, he highlighted that social networks also offer opportunities for democratic exchange.
However, Amthor warned that such platforms come with risks and raise technical questions. He questioned whether the age threshold of 16 is definitive and urged a deeper examination of the technical conditions required to make a ban practical. He also asked what a concrete age limit would look like.
In his view, Germany should pursue a coordinated European approach rather than acting alone.
