German Drug Commissioner Condemns Discount Stores for Legal Sales of Cannabis Seeds

Hendrik Streeck, the federal government’s drug commissioner, condemned the sale of cannabis seeds in more than 250 discount supermarkets. He told RTL, ntv and the “Stern” that, while the Cannabis Act allows such sales alongside ordinary household items, it is a bad idea. “It gives the impression that growing cannabis at home is normal and can lead to children and teenagers using it, because the plants are simply kept at home and no one monitors consumption, cultivation or harvest” he said.

Streeck also pointed out a legal gray area. “There is no limit on the sale of cannabis seeds, but there is a cultivation limit. You may grow no more than three plants, and growers must be aware that they cannot cultivate more than that” he explained. However, he clarified that discount supermarkets are not responsible for enforcing this cultivation restriction.
