Sources including “Welt”, “Business Insider”, and Politico, citing several people familiar with the matter, report that the Federal Employment Agency anticipates a new multi-billion euro deficit by the end of the year. This deficit is projected to exceed five billion euros, with some within the agency fearing it could reach as high as eight billion euros.
The increase in costs is attributed to the prevailing economic situation and the anticipated higher average unemployment figures, both of which are driving up expenditure on unemployment benefits significantly beyond initial plans.
The Federal Employment Agency has confirmed that its prior budget forecast, which had projected a deficit of approximately four billion euros, is no longer accurate. While the agency declined to comment on specific figures, a spokesperson noted that it can no longer rely on the previously planned level of borrowing for 2026.
