German Farm Producer Prices Plunge 10.1% YoY in Jan 2026 – Plant Goods Down 12%, Animal Prices Swing

The producer prices for agricultural products fell 10.1 % in January 2026 compared with January 2025. In December 2025 the year‑on‑year change was -8.3 %, in November 2025 -5.7 %. According to Destatis, prices in January 2026 were 2.3 % lower than in December 2025.

Plant‑based products dropped 11.9 % against January 2025, while prices for animals and animal products fell 8.9 % year‑on‑year. Against the prior month, however, plant prices increased by 1.9 % and animal prices fell by 4.7 %.

The 11.9 % decline for plant goods is largely due to sharply lower food‑potato prices. Food potatoes were 49.8 % cheaper in January 2026 than in January 2025. In December 2025 the year‑on‑year change was -48.0 %, in November 2025 -45.6 %. Compared with December 2025, potato prices rose 1.7 %.

Fruit prices were 25.3 % lower in January 2026 than a year earlier, with price cuts of -26.9 % for table apples. Vegetable prices rose 1.8 % over the year, driven by increases in lettuce (+14.4 %) and mushrooms (+3.4 %). In contrast, cruciferous vegetables fell 24.1 %.

Grain prices were 16.7 % cheaper in January 2026 compared with January 2025. Prices for marketed crops overall were 4.7 % lower a year earlier, and rapeseed fell 9.1 %. Feed‑crop prices declined 8.2 % year‑on‑year. Wine, however, rose 1.4 % against January 2025.

The 8.9 % drop in animal‑product prices is largely attributable to lower milk prices. Milk was 23.5 % cheaper in January 2026 than a year ago, and was down 8.7 % from December 2025. Eggs saw a 15.4 % price increase over the year.

Animal prices in January 2026 were 1.6 % higher than in January 2025. This was driven mainly by a 26.5 % rise in cattle prices. Prices for slaughter pigs dropped again by 16.1 % (the same level as in December 2025 versus December 2024). Poultry prices were 5.1 % higher in January 2026 than a year earlier; the increase was largely due to a 12.9 % rise in other poultry (ducks and turkeys), while chicken prices only rose 0.2 %.
