Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) expressed surprise at Hungary’s recent blockade of EU funds for Ukraine. “I am astonished by Hungary’s position” Wadephul said on Monday before consultations with his EU colleagues in Brussels. “We will discuss this with our Hungarian counterpart”. He does not believe it is appropriate for Hungary to betray its own fight for freedom and European sovereignty. Therefore, he intends to appeal in both Budapest and Brussels-with arguments-to persuade Hungary to reconsider its stance.
“Ultimately, a look back at history should show that it is right to remain European-oriented” Wadephul added. “We Germans owe Hungary much. We know that, and we also know that, at the end of the day, Hungary chose freedom-a choice that should still guide it today”.
Hungary had recently threatened to block the €90 billion EU support package for Ukraine. The backdrop to this threat includes accusations that Kyiv is allegedly deliberately preventing oil deliveries to Hungary.
