German Foreign Ministry Praises Panama’s Canal Management Before High-Level Visit

Ahead of the visit of Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) to Panama, the German government offered praise for the nation’s management of the Panama Canal. According to a spokesperson for the Foreign Office, who responded to the dts news agency on Wednesday, “We believe that Panama is fulfilling its commitments to the protection and operation of the Panama Canal very well.”

The spokesperson emphasized the crucial role the canal plays for the freedom of maritime trade and the safeguarding of global trade routes, confirming that this matter will be a key topic of discussion during the upcoming visit.

However, the German federal government has maintained a reserved stance regarding allegations raised by the U.S. President-specifically the claims that the U.S. might seek full control of the canal and that China exerts undue influence. The foreign ministry representative stated that these issues are currently being discussed between the United States and Panama, adding that he has no further comments on the matter.
